FHL Foundation Makes Fall 2017 Grants

At its October 10th, 2017, board meeting, the board made the following grants:

Language Conservancy—$5,000. This grant is in support of efforts to create a Keres dictionary. Keres is the language of the Pueblo of Acoma. Back in 2012, the Foundation made a grant to the Lakota Language Consortium. This grant was designed to put together training materials that would help the next generation of Lakota language speakers.

Imagination Library—$6,000. We have supported Imagination Library since 2013. This grant is designed to help Imagination Library expand their program of bringing books to children statewide.

Menaul School—$10,000. This grant is in support of, 1) scholarships at Menaul School, and, 2) expanding the aquaponics program.

Presbyterian Health Foundation—$15,000. This grant is in support of the therapeutic pool and provides “camperships” designed to defray the cost of using the therapeutic pool. This is our second grant in support of the therapeutic pool at the Presbyterian HealthPlex. The first grant was made in 2014.

Vero Beach Museum of Art—$10,000. We have supported Lecture Series at the Museum since 2008 and this grant continues that support. The Museum brings in speakers from all over the world to speak on issues related to art. These lectures take place in the Leonhardt Auditorium, which was renovated in 2016 with a grant from the Foundation.

Animal Humane New Mexico—$10,000. This grant is in support of the low/no cost veterinary clinic. We made a similar grant back in 2012.

ACTion Shelter—$5,000. ACTion Shelter is a no-kill animal shelter in Las Cruces. This grant is in support of, 1) the Pet Food Bank, and, 2) the P.A.W.S. (Prisoners and Animals Working Toward Success) Program. P.A.W.S. pairs up prisoners and shelter dogs. Prisoners are then responsible for training their dogs. The human–animal bond is thought to help both the prisoner and the animal develop adaptive and beneficial behavior patterns needed for success in life. We made a grant in 2000 to Animal Humane NM in support of a similar program.

Congratulations to all of our Fall 2017 grant recipients!
